Welcome to Southern California!

When I think back to when I found out we were moving from Colorado to California, I didn’t take the news well. I always considered myself a New Englander and thought I would have to dye my hair blonde; sign up for plastic surgery; and get advice from the hosts of “What Not to Wear” in order to fit in with the LA Crowd. We are in year three of our tour…I still maintain all of my natural body parts…my hair is a little blonder… I could definitely benefit from tips offered from the fashion police, but I just love, Love, LOVE California!

California’s sunshine certainly makes it easier to get up and about, but it’s the neighbors and friends I’ve met through the LAAFSC that has made our time here so exciting and rewarding.

The LAAFSC is first and foremost a social organization. We exist to meet people and to have fun! Activities such as thrift shop, hospitality, bingo at the VA hospital, book club, lunch bunch, card swap, Bunco and crafters club give members a chance to get out of the house and enjoy each other’s company. But that’s not all! Kim S is this year’s socials chair and is planning some great events for our members, and sometimes spouses too! Our activities are member-driven. If you have an idea and would like to start a sub-club, we’d love to help you get the ball rolling because we always have room for more!

Secondly, the LAAFSC is a philanthropic organization. Together with our industry partners and enormous generosity from our local business community, we awarded close to $90K in 2010/2011. About half was presented as scholarships to children of military and DoD civilians. The rest benefitted local and national military organizations, schools and civic organizations. Many join our club just to share the great feeling we experience for being able to make a difference within our community!

Third, members use the LAAFSC as an information resource to know what to do, where to go and how to get there! We email our monthly newsletter, Spacelines, to our members and send bi-weekly News to Use emails so you don’t miss out on all the great opportunities our community offers.
